IV Nutritional Therapies – Not Your Grandmother’s Vitamin B-12 Shot

While IV Nutritional Therapies may still be considered “trendy,” they are, in fact, not at all new. The concept of intravenous infusing various vitamins and minerals is credited to Dr. John Myers, an internist in the 1960s with Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Myers reasoned that we are not actually absorbing optimal amounts of needed nutrition into our bloodstream, primarily due to how our digestive system processes and breaks down foods and vitamin supplements. Add to that the increased consumption of fast foods, which are potentially devoid of any nutritional benefit, and direct vitamin infusion into the bloodstream makes perfect sense.

While individual vitamin infusions were not new in the ‘60s, blending them into a vitamin “cocktail” was considered progressive and the concept attributed to Dr. Myers retained his name, hence the “Myers’ Cocktail.” While the exact ratios of each component are still up for debate, the Myers’ Cocktail is a mixture of medical-grade nutrients, including magnesium, calcium, various B vitamins, and vitamin C.

While the Myers’ Cocktail is still very much at the core of most vitamin infusion therapies, today there are different “concoctions” that may be tailored to the individual’s health need. Vitamin infusions as an approach to health optimization and longevity is being perpetually popularized by various NFL and NBA athletes, as well as celebrities, such as Madonna, Rhianna, Simon Cowell, Cindy Crawford, and most recently, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Lisa Rinna, who received her “elixir” while lounging in her bed on a recent episode of the show.

But, the benefits of IV Nutritional Therapy is not reserved just for high-paid entertainers. Accessibility has expanded and affordability is more reasonable. Many packages are now available ranging in price from $99-$200 depending on the ingredients, and of course geographic location. Note that insurances do not cover nutritional infusions.
