What's Age Got To Do With It Anyway?

Age is a number, the preconceptions of which you may disregard at any moment. In fact, I highly encourage you tossing whatever you believe 30 something, 40 something, 50 something and 60 something and beyond is "supposed" to look like.

I mean, really, who says we have to look and behave a certain way because we are X years old. Where are our ideas of what is appropriate for a woman in her 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and plus coming from anyway? Our parents? Our grandparents? Society?

Pardon my language, but screw that.

We can choose for ourselves what is "appropriate" for us in terms of dress - Sorry, Stacey and Clinton (What Not To Wear) but if a woman is over 35 and feels comfortable enough in her skin to wear a mini-skirt, then by all means she should rock that skirt.

Likewise, we can choose for ourselves what is "appropriate" in terms of behavior. I mean, seriously, I think I stopped "maturing" about a decade ago. So. while my birth certificate lists 44 going on 45, my maturity level is presently hanging around 34 (or below, depending on who you talk to).

I read a quote from Cameron Diaz some time ago where she just owned her self-proclaimed immaturity. God bless her because she helped me, in that moment, release my own warped ideas of what was "appropriate" for certain ages.

If you hear yourself saying, "...but I am X years old, and therefore I can't blah, blah, blah. Stop it. We are choosing unnecessary self-imposed limitations every single time we say, "...but I am X years old (a/k/a I' can't)."

I for one am over unnecessarily limiting myself because someone else decided that skirt or that behavior is not appropriate for a woman of my age.

And, I am not the only one who is over this ridiculousness. Look at Raquel Welch, Cher, Madonna, just for starters.

May we be who we choose to be, dress how we choose to dress and behave how we choose to behave regardless of our age.
